Our Purpose
A cross discipline engineering club with the mission to design and build a solar powered boat based out of the University of Rochester. Our goal is to learn a hands on approach to the hydrodynamics, materials, mechanics, and electronics involved in building an electric boat with the intention of entering the international Solar Splash Competition.
Who Can Join?
Solar Splash is an Engineering club. If you are majoring in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering this club is a perfect way to gain cross disciplinary and hands on experience. However, you do not have to be an engineering major to join. Anyone with an interest in boats, solar power, materials, or even just hands on projects is welcome to join. In fact, before joining, most members know little to nothing about boating.
About Us
University of Rochester Solar Splash has successfully moved from a small project to a successful engineering club at the U of R. Founded in January 2009, the club has just successfully competed in the 2010 Solar Boating world championship in Fayetteville, AR and is looking forward to an even stronger showing in 2011. Our process consists of three phases: design, fabrication, and testing which we divide among groups and group leaders. If interested in joining please contact us by email or come to one of our general interest meetings at the beginning of every semester.
The Competition
ASME Solar Splash was founded in 1994. It is an International Solar Boat Championship which hosts competitions in a variety of events including a sprint, endurance, and slalom race. Boats compete in design categories as well such as visual display, workmanship, and technical report. The competition is held in either late May or early June.
The 2010 competition Results Are up!
University of Rochester Solar Splash is pleased to announce a ninth place overall finish. In addition, our team was the 2010 Rookie of the Year and recipient of the Teamwork award.
